"PlayStation 3 truly is the system to be placed in the center of the living room in homes around the globe," said Ken Kutaragi, widely considered the father of the PlayStation. "The future is almost here with the PS3."

Sony unveiled its next-generation console at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005. The PlayStation3 is supposed to hit the markets in the spring of 2006. Sony claims that PS3 will be roughly 35 times more powerful than PS2. The PS3 will be fully backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games. The system will ship with a built-in gigabit Ethernet port and can handle both types of wireless Internet access, 802.11b and 802.11g. Wireless controllers using Bluetooth technology will be standard for the PS3. Sony said the system will support up to seven simultaneous players. The PS3 will come in three colors: black, silver and white. Games will include: Devil May Cry 4, Mobile Suit Gundam, Tekken, Killzone, Vision Gran Turismo, and Metal Gear Solid 4.

Sony also confirmed the PlayStation 3 will use Blu-ray discs as its media format. The discs can hold up to six times as much data as current-generation DVDs. It will also sport a slot for a detachable 2.5-inch HDD. Sony did not mention if the drive would be standard. The PS3 will also include slots for a number of consumer electronic digital storage devices, including Sony memory sticks, SD memory cards and compact flash cards.

The PlayStation3 has outputs for two high-definition televisions. The PS3's ability to display data on two screens can be used for a multitude of purposes, said Sony. Players might be able to create a panoramic view by attaching two TVs, high definition or standard definition.
